Mini-Pod - The Term "Self-Care" - Beyond Camp

See this content in the original post

Is self-care problematic? How do we love ourselves and not buy into a false narrative about self-care and spending money?

Thanks to Alana Matteson for bringing this article to our attention:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/21/self-care-radical-feminist-idea-mass-market

It’s the basis for this Beyond Camp mini-pod with Cassie and Rachel

Tune in to hear about:

  • Transformation of self-care to me time

    • Preservation vs improving

    • self-care as self-help

    • Me time as an excuse

  • “#selfcare has been used more than 18 million times on Instagram alone. Type it in and thousands of images of glossy-haired women lounging in health spas will pop up.”

  • “A Burst of Light, a book by Audre Lorde. Written after she had been diagnosed with cancer for a second time, Lorde talks about self-care as a radical political act. “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence,” she wrote. “It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.””

  • In 2020 google searches for “self-care and selfcare products” went up 250% since 2014

  • Self-care can become an excuse to avoid pushing ourselves even slightly outside of comfort zones. As a consequence, we miss out on opportunities to learn and to have experiences we can’t directly control.

What is Beyond Camp?

Cassie Bloy and Rachel Kent are here to explore the intersection of camp and our lives. As much as people like to talk about camp and ‘the real world’ as two separate entities, camp professionals know that this simply isn’t true. Beyond Camp dives into how different aspects of our lives affect our camp experience, effectively bursting the camp bubble and welcoming all parts of our lives into the conversation.
