I Can't Believe She's Giving Us These "OMG! Forms' for Free... But I Love JWS for This!

A Most Critical Camp Program Excellence 'HINT' from Joanna Warren Smith

Decide Now. Who will be Responsible?

For the past six years, my universal recommendation after my Summer On-Site Assessments for day and resident camps has been to...

Appoint a QUALITY CONTROL COORDINATOR whose SOLE responsibility is to be out in the field every day observing program and tending to the details of the camper experience to guarantee absolute satisfaction and adherence to the camp's mission and philosophy.

And too often, Directors tell me that THEY do this job. Or it is 'more than adequately' covered by their Assistant/Program/Village Directors or Head Counselors. They say it, and they believe it, but based on my observation, IT IS NOT TRUE!  These folks are too busy doing their real jobs and simply do not have the time for the Quality Control that is essential in today's competitive marketplace to ensure High Retention and 'off-the-charts' Referral Rates.

Those camps that have taken my suggestion seriously have realized measurable benefit in the subsequent season and a number are now using Quality Control Teams to guarantee ongoing success.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

  • Consider Returning Staff. Those who know the ropes, who understand the culture of your camp and are well respected by others are the best candidates.

  • Think of a Tag Team Approach. If you have two people who would be good, but their talents will be missed in other areas, the assignment could be shared. In this way, they could also develop the Quality Control System protocols together.

  • Use an Evaluation Form. The two attached updated versions of the 'OMG! Form have been used by camps all over the country for years now. They are so simple, but they work and they will provide structure. [Original ‘OMG! Form | 2022 version]

  • 'If You See Something, Say Something'. It is an absolute must for all staff to be empowered to identify issues when they see them and be willing to report them so that action can be taken.

Every single Parent Focus Group that I have facilitated since 2020 has indicated that moms and dads are increasing their expectations of camp, not lowering their standards; so this Quality Control Initiative will give you a solid advantage if you commit RIGHT NOW to make it happen this summer.
