Liz Ramirez

5-MINUTE FRIDAYS INSTRUCTOR

What camps have you worked at?

  • Fiver Children's Foundation (counselor, character education specialist, assistant camp director, year-round program manager)

  • As a JEDI consultant: Camp Wawenock, Camp Scatico, Camp Cory, Camp Wanakeee

Why is working at summer camp important to you?

Young people are like mirrors. I feel like I'm always learning about myself professionally and personally.

Who is a camp leader you look up to and why?

Larry Geller- He taught public speaking and swimming at Camp Fiver. He was sweet, passionate and was good at making people feel special.

What was the first time you were noticed and appreciated by an adult that wasn't your parent?

Ms. DeJesus from 2nd grade. I had an afterschool accident then led to a bloody forehead-turned scab. The next day all I could think about was how my classmates would make fun of my scar.

My teacher noticed, walked me to the bathroom, wiped off her makeup and said something like "it’s okay. I'm not perfect". Every day after she kept cocoa butter on her desk for me to put on my scar. I don't have a scar and she made me feel incredibly special.

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of camp?

Cooking for and with people.

What are you passionate about (besides summer camp)?

Entrepreneurship! I love coming up with creative ideas to problems. I think it's how I express my creativity.

What is something that not a lot of people know about you?

That I always wanted to be an athlete. I admired the discipline, grit and, most importantly, jerseys >.<

What was your act in your camp's talent show?

Jokes and random dancing in a shark suit. The nickname Liz-Shark was born.

What's your favourite meal at camp?

Buying a bagel sandwich from the nearby town and eating it on camp during downtime. ahahhahaha
