Why is working at summer camp important to you?
Communities are so powerful.
My lifelong goal is to do everything I can as a psychologist, camp director, and speaker to help my own communities and those of others be forces for good - where children, teens, and adults feel known, liked, challenged, included, and supported.
Who is a camp leader you look up to and why?
I learned so many of my clinical and camp skills from Dr. Peter Gero who is a therapist, ran BLAST Social Skills, and was the summer camp director at Tom Sawyer for many, many years.
His unique approach is quick, kind, humorous, logical, and impactful long-term.
He delivers invaluable feedback in the moment that really sticks with children and adults, helps them effectively adjust their behavior, and develop their social skills and self-awareness.
What was the first time you were noticed and appreciated by an adult that wasn't your parent?
There was a woman at my church in high school who used to take me out to lunch every month. She would just ask me questions about my life and listen.
There were no specific topics, no strings attached, no agenda - just kindness, nonjudgment, and someone really engaging and caring.
I don't remember much about the content of those conversations, but I still vividly remember how I felt sitting with her.
